best places to find parts rusted useless for art project?

I'm doing an art project on the conformity of society, and I'm trying to create a person completely from old pieces of rusted metal car, rusted cans and various other waste products. I have literally no budget and I'm fighting for places that sell cheap rusted parts. I was thinking about tips / skips, or junkyards .. Is it illegal to take it from there? many thanks .. any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
